R129 is the latest European safety regulation for children’s car booster seats. It ensures that children benefit from the vehicle’s built-in safety systems, like side airbags, by requiring boosters to be taller and to better position children for optimal crash protection.
Seats are now classified based on a child's height — starting at either 125cm or 135cm.
WHAT CHANGED WITH R129-04
Until the end of 2024, seats could still be certified under R129.03.
From 2025 onwards, all newly designed boosters must comply with R129-04, which includes: An advanced abdominal pressure test using new crash dummies fitted with abdominal sensors.
This testing revealed that traditional boosters could cause dangerous seatbelt pressure on a child's abdomen during a crash.
